costs to increase for selling online

costs to increase for selling online

You will recall UK Rollout for Google Shopping will commence from February 13, 2013 where we set out the Google announcement of the UK launch date for the new paid-for system.

Well Google has just followed it up with emails, presumably targeted at current users of the Merchant Center, where:

  • The launch date is still valid
  • Re-inforcing the fact the ranking will be dependant on relevancy of product listing and BID
  • The new system (paid) will provide an incentive for suppliers to keep their listings up-to-date
  • An incentive offer has been made to get all current Merchant Center customers to get us all much more involved/enthused about this new system

We’re giving merchants several months to transition to this new model. The first major changes will take place on 13 February and the transition to the commercial model will be complete by end of Q2 2013. To encourage merchants to make this transition on Google Shopping, we are offering some

incentives:

* Existing Google Shopping merchants who sign up and create a Product Listing Ad campaign promoting all of their products in Merchant Centre by

12 April 2013 could qualify for promotional credit;

* Eligible merchants who create Product Listing Ads will automatically receive credit for 10% of their monthly Product Listing Ad spend from 15 February 2013 through 30 June 2013.

Over the next few months Google will hold webinars on Google Shopping, Google Merchant Center, Google Product Listing Ads and other topics to help us all with this new development.

A full copy of their email can be seen below:

Hello,

On 15 November 2012, we announced the roll-out of a new commercial Google Shopping experience built on Product Listing Ads for Google Shopping in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, Australia and Switzerland. We designed this initiative to help shoppers to better research purchases, compare different products and their features and prices, and then connect with merchants to make their purchases.

We believe that having a commercial relationship with merchants will encourage them to keep their product information fresh and up to date.

Higher quality data – whether it’s accurate prices, the latest offers or product availability – should mean better shopping results for users, which in turn should create higher quality traffic for merchants.

Traditional web results on Google Search will not be affected by this transition. Details of the announcement can be found at:

LIST YOUR PRODUCTS ON GOOGLE SHOPPING

To list your products on Google Shopping, you’ll need to create Product Listing Ads based on your existing product feed from Merchant Centre and manage your ads with an AdWords account. Enrol in AdWords at google.co.uk/adwords if you don’t already have an account. To learn more about Product Listing Ads, please visit http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/5zeArpuQ9NoT6Iemglcao9. For questions on AdWords and AdWords set-up, please contact us at http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/0Drgg0qSAeA0yPKUFq8X4c

While your current product listings will continue to appear on Google Shopping for several months, it’s important to note that from February 2013, bid is one factor in how products will be ranked on Google Shopping.

We encourage merchants to create Product Listing Ads now – and we’re offering a special promotion to get you started.

IMPORTANT FEED SPECIFICATION AND POLICY UPDATES

In an effort to improve the data quality on Google Shopping, we updated our international feed specifications. The new feed specifications will take effect in March 2013. These updates will align our global product feeds more closely and enable us to surface better results to users. For more information on the upcoming changes, please visit the Help Centre at http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/6rIPOwLmAsnXPCtVhC7hY2.

Advertisers who are using the Product Ads feed specification, detailed at http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/0b5XfvjgZo502Kot3wzL3v, will need to bring their feeds into compliance with the new Google Shopping feed requirements.

In addition to the update to our international feed specifications, we will also be releasing a new set of Google Shopping programme policies. The detailed policies will be announced in January next year.

Over the next few months we will hold webinars on Google Shopping, Google Merchant Center, Google Product Listing Ads and other topics. Please keep an eye on the AdWords blog at http://www.google.com/appserve/mkt/1c3fiwmQjzrL7vNkVMrnAe for webinar dates and information on how to participate.
